Buchu is the common name for a group of indigenous plants that are prized for their aromatic oils. The plants were first utilised by Khoi pasturalists who used the leaves of the plants that they called ‘bucku’ to perfume their bodies. Today buchu enjoys a reputation as one of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s most robust elixirs. Buchu leaves and soft stems are collected while the plant is flowering and fruiting and are dried and exported from Cape Town. All buchu species are protected flora, yet a dramatic increase in the price offered for the plants has resulted in their over-exploitation in the wild. Main Actions: nutritive, antioxidant, emollient. Main Uses: as a nutritive; as an antioxidant (for its selenium content); as an emollient (oil is used for the skin and hair) .
